If you find that you are overusing consumables, there are six possible reasons.

1. Replacing consumables at the wrong time

Many stores replace supplies after a certain number of piercings or during shift changes. In fact, when the hafnium pit reaches 0.040 inches deep, the standard all-copper electrode should be replaced. The silver/hafnium interface electrode can safely reach a pit depth of 0.080 inches before it needs to be replaced.

2. The torch is too far (or too close) from the workpiece

The arc stops at the wrong time. Make sure the torch remains on the plate at the end of the cut.

3. Too little gas supply

This is probably the most common cause of excessive wear on consumables. Low flow rates can cause the pilot arc to adhere to the inside of the nozzle bore, resulting in catastrophic, near-immediate nozzle damage.

4. Not enough coolant is flowing to the torch

Proper coolant flow is critical for proper consumable wear. Flow restrictions reduce the cooling of consumables, which can lead to excessive heat build-up and faster corrosion in consumables.

5. Poor connection of working cable

A good electrical connection is essential. Arc transfer occurs within 100 milliseconds if the connection is good. A poor connection can delay 1⁄2 second or more, causing excessive wear on the consumables.
